Every few years an actor gets a bunch of his actor buddies together to have a good time under the guise of making a movie. Sometimes the result is a pretty good film like, “Ocean’s 11″ (both the Sinatra/Dean Martin and George Clooney/Brad Pitt versions) and sometimes the result is “Grown Ups 2″ with Adam Sandler and friends.
You can ask any kid and they’ll tell you, fart jokes are funny. Most of us grow out that phase, but not Sandler. “GU2” is basically a couple of hours of endless fart jokes.
The flimsy premise revolves around Lenny (Sandler) who has relocated his family back to the small town where he and his friends grew up. That’s pretty much all you need to know about the sketchy story, which seems like one really long, really bad episode of Saturday Night Live. Actually, the SNL comparison is more than appropriate, since the cast includes 14 former and current SNL castmembers, including Chris Rock, David Spade, Maya Rudolph, Colin Quinn, Tim Meadows, Jon Lovitz, Cheri Oteri,Ellen Cleghorne, Andy Samberg, Bobby Moynihan, Taran Killam, Paul Brittain, and Will Forte.
Former SNL hosts are also on hand, including Salma Hayek, Kevin James, Steve Buscemi and Nick Swardson. Teen heartthrob Taylor Lautner had the good sense to not receive film credit. I’m sure the cast parties were hysterical; the movie was not. It’s a sad state of affairs when the funniest person in the film is Shaquille O’Neal.
Like I said, “Grown Ups 2” is basically two hours of fart jokes. It’s a shame that the kids who find fart jokes funny aren’t old enough to see the movie. It’s rated PG-13.
The Bottom Line: You probably won’t be able to discourage the grandkids from going, but do your best. They’ll thank you later.
Rated PG-13, 1 hr. 41 min.
